A self employed person can be a cab driver or a dentist. When you are self employed the first thing you need to do is to register for self employment with HMRC. HMRC then issues you a Unique Tax Payer Reference (UTR). Although you can still file a tax return without the UTR number provided you prepare and post your tax return to HMRC before 31 October.
